One Step Lead Abatement

Blastox® is a granular chemical abrasive additive that is available pre-blended from licensed blenders with slags, sands, or other media for use in the removal of lead based paint. Standard blasting equipment is used with no change in efficiency or profile. The spent residue is non-hazardous and can be disposed of in a local Subtitle D landfill.

The U.S. EPA defines silicate chemistries as Best Demonstrated Available Technology (BDAT) for the stabilization of lead containing waste. Blastox®, a complex calcium silicate, stabilizes lead through multiple mechanisms-pH adjustment; chemical reactions; encapsulation. The resultant material is a lead silicate matrix. Blastox® containing spent waste samples have passed through thousands of TCLP tests, the EPA Multiple Extraction Procedure (MEP, 10 extractions of the same sample in an acidic solution) representing long term stability, the SPLP, and fresh water leach testing. Silicates have been used for decades to stabilize heavy metals in landfills.

Using the Blastox® additive can also make for a safer work environment. With Blastox® blended abrasives, lead in the air results are routinely far below those of hard, recyclable abrasives. When Blastox® blended abrasives are used with wet abrasive blast systems, lead in the air values may be below the OSHA Action Level.

The Blastox® Technology has been tested by the US EPA and approved for use by branches of the US Military, the Federal Highway Administration and the state DOT's. Blastox® is specified by most industrial engineers and used by hundreds of contractors and generators.
